Job description
The Centre for Brain Research (cbr-iisc.ac.in) at the Indian Institute of Science has embarked on a unique collaborative endeavour - a Biomarker Centre of Excellence in partnership with the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) and with support from Gates Ventures. This ambitious initiative aims to establish a sophisticated platform for the discovery and validation of neurodegenerative disease biomarkers. In addition to plasma biomarkers, the Centre will also explore digital biomarkers to build a more comprehensive understanding of disease onset and progression.
A unique strength of this Centre of Excellence is that it will function under the scientific guidance of Professor Henrik Zetterberg (UK DRI and University of Gothenburg), a globally recognised pioneer in biomarker research, and Professor Siddharthan Chandran, Director of the UK DRI, both of whom are Visiting Faculty Members at CBR. The Centre will integrate the state-of-the-art in fluid biomarker assays, high-throughput proteomics, and AI-driven analytics with unique, diverse cohorts from India and the UK in order to accelerate breakthroughs in early diagnosis. It will foster cross-institutional partnerships, training, and knowledge exchange to build capacity and advance global brain health research.
The Data Scientist will play a central role in analysing and integrating complex biomarker datasets to advance discovery and validation of neurodegenerative disease biomarkers. This role requires expertise in data science, statistical modelling, and AI/ML approaches, combined with an understanding of biological and clinical contexts. The Data Scientist will collaborate closely with laboratory scientists, clinicians, and international partners, including the UK Dementia Research Institute, to extract meaningful insights from large-scale fluid biomarker, multi-omics, clinical, and imaging data. The Data Scientist will report to the Lead, Biomarker Centre of Excellence.
Responsibilities:
• Develop and apply statistical, machine learning, and computational models to analyse biomarker, proteomic, and clinical datasets
• Integrate multimodal data from fluid biomarkers, genomics, imaging, and clinical assessments to identify predictive and diagnostic signatures
• Collaborate with research scientists and technicians to design data analysis plans and ensure rigorous data curation, cleaning, and quality control
• Lead the development and maintenance of secure, well-documented data pipelines, databases, and dashboards for internal and collaborative use
• Stay updated on methodological advances in AI/ML, bioinformatics, and biomarker analytics, and help translate these into the Centre’s workflows
• Foster strong linkages with international networks and maintain active engagement with the UK DRI Fluid Biomarker Lab to ensure global alignment and collaborative growth
• Contribute proactively to the broader vision of CBR, including capacity-building, outreach, and public engagement initiatives.
Requirements:
Essential qualifications
• Master’s or PhD in Data Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Computational Biology, or a related quantitative discipline
• Strong programming skills and familiarity with relevant data science libraries
• Proficiency in statistical analysis, data visualisation, and data management and ability to translate complex data insights into biological interpretations
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams
Desirable qualifications
• Demonstrable experience analysing large-scale biological or clinical datasets, preferably biomarker or omics data
• Strong understanding of data governance, privacy regulations, and ethical considerations in biomedical research
Compensation:
• Competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience • Access to world-class research infrastructure and cross-institutional training opportunities • Direct engagement and collaboration with UK DRI researchers, Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), and other leaders in biomarker science and neurodegeneration research • Opportunity to interface with the Indian Institute of Science’s vibrant, interdisciplinary research ecosystem spanning engineering, life sciences, and data science • Support for professional development and participation in scientific meetings and workshops • Additional benefits as per CBR policies
